Durable Self Cleaning Property on Cotton Fabric by Synthesised TiO2 Nanoparticles at Room Temperature.

Himadri Tanaya Mahanta

In this study, synthesis and optimization of titanium dioxide nanoparticles were carried out at room temperature by sol-gel technique using Box-Behnken design of experiment. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles were characterised using UV-visible spectrophotometer in which the band gap energy was determined as 3.31 eV, particle size analyser (PSA) analysed size of nanoparticles as 250 nm and scanning electron microscope (SEM) showed uniform distribution of nanoparticles on surface of fabric. The titanium dioxide nanoparticles were applied on cotton fabric through pad-dry-cure method to develop self-cleaning property on cotton fabric. The stain degradation property was evaluated initial and after 20 washes and determined significant decrease in K/S value with increase in concentration of nanoparticles. There is no significant effect on inherent properties of fabric to be found.

Producing Fire Retardant Cotton Fabric Using Chicken Eggshell

Granch Berhe Tseghai, Birhane Tekle Berhe and Yeshi Tadesse Wakjira

Cotton has poor fire retardance characteristics. As a result, the textile material is not recommended in areas of fire risks though it has high comfort factor that make preferable for wearing purpose; therefore, imparting fire retardance is must to cotton. This research focuses on producing fire retardant cotton fabric using chicken eggshell to replace synthetic fire-retardant chemicals. Chicken eggshell contains fire-retardant mineral such as calcium carbonate, phosphorous, nitrous, potassium and zinc. Imparting fire retardance using synthetic chemicals has many limitations; toxicity, environmental hazards, non-biodegradable, non-renewable source and cost. On the other side chicken eggshell being bio-product has not any side effects since it occurs in nature abundantly. In most cases the chicken eggshell is removed after usage or hatching causing a big environmental pollution in appearance as well as in odour. Conversion of such wastes to treasure has a dual benefit in preventing cotton from burning extension and using the eggshell wastes for valuable treatment process. Treated fabric using chicken eggshell showed low flammability than untreated. In addition, the treated fabric formed ash and char, whereas untreated fabric produced only ash and got totally burn. The fire propagations were 40 and 1.4 mm per second for untreated and treated fabrics respectively.

Mosquito Repellent Finishing of Cotton Using Pepper Tree (Schinus molle) Seed Oil Extract

Granch Berhe Tsghai, Tekalgn Gebremedhin Belay and Abrehaley Hagos Gebremariam

Mosquito repellent materials are a standout amongst the most developing approaches to propel the textile field by giving the required attributes of protection against mosquitoes, particularly in tropical territories. These kinds of materials make sure the protection of individuals from the mosquitoes and the mosquito-borne diseases like intestinal sickness, filariasis and dengue fever. In this investigation Schinus molle (Pepper Tree) seed oil was utilized as mosquito repellent completion. The investigation concentrated on the entrance of mosquito repellent completion in textile applications just as nature-based options in contrast to commercial synthetic mosquito anti-agents in the market. Appropriate techniques and materials to accomplish mosquito repellency are talked about and brought up. Cotton sample was treated within the sight of acrylic copolymer cover for better obsession. Schinus molle Seed Oil demonstrated very inspiring repellency to mosquitoes without causing much impact on the mass properties of the texture like quality, solidifies and bowing length. Be that as it may, the absorption was altogether diminished.

Effect of TiO2 Nanoparticles on Aluminium Effect Pigment Coated Fabric-Application of Reflection and Transmission of Light through Fabric

Mohammad Mamunur Rashida and Boris Mahltigb

Cotton and polyester plain woven fabric have been incorporated with two coats: basecoat with/without TiO2 nanoparticles and topcoat prepared with aluminium effect pigment. After pigmenting and drying, the reflection and transmission characteristics were measured through UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The reflection and transmission properties of the coated textile were investigated as a function of wavelength ranging from 220 nm to 1400 nm. Using TiO2 nanoparticle as coating in combination with aluminium effect pigment can be used to develop optical protection of textile- will be discussed in this work.

Okonkwo SN, Ohanuzue CBC, Onuegbu GC, Obasi HC and Nnorom OO

Extraction of natural dye from Whitfieldia lateritia plant and its application on cotton fabric was studied. In this research, natural dye was extracted from the leaves of Whitfieldia lateritia using 1% alkali as solvent. The dye extract was analyzed in the area of fabric dyeing using a mixture of alum and tannic acid as mordant, and sodium dithionite as reducing agent. UV-Vis spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy and colour fastness to washing, perspiration and daylight were also carried out. It was revealed that Whitfieldia lateritia dye is a direct dye since it dyed cotton fabric without the aid of a mordant. However, the application of mordant improved the colour fastness of the dyed cotton fabric. UV-Vis and FTIR spectroscopy confirmed the possible presence of some percentages of flavonoids, polyphenols and tannins in the dye.
